PYEC EDUCATION & DEVELOPMENT

PYEC provides leadership to ensure that Anangu children and young people receive quality education and support in order to be successful in both Anangu and Piranpa ways.

 
 

INDULKANA anangu school

Indulkana Anangu School is a Birth-Year 12 school.
Kunpu wanganara nintiringkupai (strong, smart and respectful learners) are the school values which are at the heart of everything done at the school.
Early learning programs are provided through the Family Centre (Birth to 3 years old) and the Preschool (3-5 years).
Students, staff and families work together to ensure that all who attend our school have the knowledge and skills to be able to ‘walk in both worlds’.
The majority of students at Indulkana are bilingual or multilingual and their first language is Pitjantjatjara or Yankunytjatjara.
PYEC holds a meeting each term that sets the direction for teaching and learning.

Mimili ANANGU school

Mimili Anangu School is an R-12 school.
The school aligns to the PYEC recommendations of two Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara lessons per week for all students.
Mimili school recognises the importance of teaching students their first language and celebrating their success in their first language. Teachers and AEWs teach students their Pitjantjatjara sight words daily using a sight word display in the classroom or a powerpoint.
The predominant languages at Mimili are Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara, with student usually being introduced to English when they start school.
Mimili Anangu School has a vision of Working together for great starts, strong futures.

fregon (Kaltjiti) ANANGU school

Fregon Anangu School is a R-12 school, with a preschool and playgroup within the Child Parent Centre.
The school follows the value ‘Kunpu Nintiringkunytjaku’ (For strong learning) and involves families in all aspects of its operations.
PYEC ensures that community members and families are involved in setting the activities for learning, enabling a strong focus on culture.
Students at the school predominantly speak Pitjantjatjara as their first language.

ERNABELLA (Pukatja) ANANGU school

Ernabella (Pukatja) Anangu School is a Birth-12 School.
Over 90% of students at Ernabella are Anangu and their first language is Pitjantjatjara or Yankunytjatjara.
The aim of Ernabella Anangu School is to provide Anangu with the necessary skills and abilities to be self-determining.
The Early Years program is run through the Family Centre (Family and birth-3) and the Pre-school (3-5 year olds).

Kenmore Park ANANGU school

“Kenmore Park Anangu Schoolangka nganana palyalpai kunpungku, kulintja wiru, nintingku kulilpai kulintja kunpu ngura nganampa nganampa tjiti tjuta ninti worldpaku, palu ngurangka nyinapai. Tjana wiyaringkula ninti ngaranyi piranpaku/munu ananguku tjurkupa wangkaku”.

“At Kenmore Park Anangu School we create confident, freethinking, problem solvers with strong connections to our community and land. Our students are globally aware, yet locally grounded. They graduate with the skills to successfully move freely between Piranpa and Anangu worlds”.

Kenmore Park Anangu School is located on a working cattle station, Kenmore Park.
The schools caters for students from Birth to Year 12 and has a strong community presence.
The school has access to a local orchard which is highly valued by the community.

Amata anangu school

Most students at Amata are Anangu and speak either Pitjantjatjara or Yankunytjatjara as their first language. English is limited and for many students it is only spoken in the school setting.
The school values of I am a Learner, I am Respectful, I am Safe, I am Responsible are embedded into classroom practice and across the school.
Amata has a ‘No School, No Pool’ policy during terms 1 and 4, with students able to access the pool during PE lessons and after school as well.
The school aims to create the conditions for sustainable empowered futures for Aangu using these principles:
1. Establishing mindsets that inspire high expectations & expire learned helplessness;
2. ‘Aangu First’ approach to co-planning, with the 2-way science approach as the first stage;
3. Culture and language first in the timetable (every day) and integrated with curriculum;
4. Active and intentional emphasis on bilingual learning & language acquisition; and
5. Culturally safe & trauma informed practices.

Kanypi/Nyapari ANANGU school

Murputja Anangu School was established in 1993 and is a Birth to Year 12 school.
Children from the communities for Kanypi, Nyapari, Angatja Homelands and Watarru attend.
Most students are Anangu, speaking Pitjantjatjara as a first language and have a strong connection to their cultural identities.
The school has a strong focus on student wellbeing to enable engagement in learning.
Key subject areas are Pitjantjatjara, English, Mathematics and Science. Other subjects are taught using an integrated approach with clear links to literacy, numeracy and inquiry.

Pipalyatjara/kalka ANANGU school

Pipalyatjara Anangu School is a Birth-Year 12 School. It was opened in 1967 as a one teacher school and now has 10 teachers and 10 support staff.
A Preschool and playgroup is run every school day for 0-3 year olds and their parents.
‘Working and learning together to create strong beginnings and strong futures’ is the school’s vision.'
The majority of students speak Pitjantjatjara or Yankunytjatjara as their first language and are introduced to English at school.
Students come from the communities of Pipalyatjara and Kalka.
The First Language Maintenance and Development Program includes every class receiving three weekly Pitjantjatjara Language and literacy lessons. Senior students have engaged in SACE stage 1 Australian Languages with the first successful student completing in 2017.

Oak Valley ANANGU school

Oak Valley Anangu School runs a playgroup, preschool, primary and secondary programs.
Oak Valley is a very remote community set on the edge of the Great Victorian Desert and home to some of the most sacred land in Anangu culture.
The students generally speak English as a second or third language.
Nintiringkunytjaku (I’m going to learn) is embedded in the school culture and the official vision is Great start, strong futures, empowered communities.
The overarching goal of the school is to improve the learning outcomes of all students with recognition of the importance of culture and traditions.
The current school building has been open since 2003.

Yalata ANANGU school

Yalata Anangu School has a strong focus on student wellbeing and a high level of flexibility in catering for students’ learning and social needs.
Yalata is 203km west of Ceduna.
The school provides programs that promote active participation and outcomes for students in a safe, supportive and well-resourced learning environment.
Families at the school come from a range of communities including Yalata, Oak Valley, Ceduna and Tjuntjuntjara in Western Australia.
The predominant language is Pitjantjatjara with English as a second or third language.

Wiltja Boarding

Wiltja Boarding provides culturally responsive care and learning opportunities to secondary aged Anangu students who are willing to engage in metropolitan schooling at Avenues College.

The vision of Anangu is that Wiltja will fully develop each student’s academic and social potential in a culturally appropriate manner.

Anangu also wish that their children are able to confidently determine and control their futures and aspirations on and off country.  

Wiltja Boarding is therefore committed to providing a highly supportive residential and learning environment where each individual is valued and their learning, health and wellbeing are always the priority.
